Progress

During 2007, VfMH enlisted the services of an independent reviewer from the charity 'Voluntary service overseas' in order to take a more objective look at what we are doing and how the Charity should proceed with its work to best assist and support patients at the Hospital.

Things at the hospital had changed considerably since we first started sending volunteers there. General living conditions on the wards have improved and the hospital have become more selective about who they accept as a volunteer and what tasks volunteers do and don't carry out. With Romania joining the EU in 2007, hospital policies and regulations became more stringent again in line with EU legislation. Although the role of the volunteer had adapted with these changes, the overall work of the charity needed to change with it.

With the tightening of hospital policies came a request from the hospital that our volunteers be supervised and managed by a full time member of staff in order to ensure that work in the clubroom complies with legislation and that a consistent service is offered to the patients.

VfMH decided that in order for the project to continue successfully, we needed to recruit a full time volunteer co-ordinator; a local person with a professional background in healthcare and experience of working with people who use mental health services.

VfMH decided to work together with the hospital and Pro Vobis, the Romanian National Resource Centre for Volunteering, in order to recruit and train such a person.

After over three years of work, several changes of hospital management, and a few set-backs along the way, we were all delighted to welcome Corina Olariu, our new co-ordinator who joined our team in 2010.

Corina was interviewed by representatives from VfMH, Pro Vobis and the hospital director in April 2010 and was offered and accepted the position shortly after. She completed an induction with VfMH and Pro-vobis before starting her work in earnest in June 2010.

Corina is employed by Pro Vobis but funded by VfMH to work three days per week for the benefit of the patients. She has formed a good relationship with staff and patients and is well established as VfMH representative. She is responsible for running the patients' club, supervising the volunteers and acting as liaison between the hospital, the charity and the patients. The patients are now able to benefit from a consistent timetable in the clubroom and being able to work therapeutically with someone from their own culture.

Corina is also starting to take on other projects, in order to further the aims of VfMH and ultimately improve the lives of the patients. Watch this space for updates...

We see Corina’s position as being the beginning of a transition to a Romanian led service, wholly managed and run by the hospital, which is the ultimate aim of our organization.
