VfMH is a small charity based in the UK. We send volunteers to Tarnaveni Hospital in Romania to work alongside the Romanian staff and to provide a programme of therapeutic activities for long-term male and female inpatients. The Tarnaveni Project was established in January 1992 by a group of psychiatric nurses based in London, Birmingham and Swansea. VfMH was created as a vehicle for this in 1998 and is a registered charity (no. 1082385) and company limited by guarantee (no: 3562166) VfMH is run in the UK by individuals who have previously been volunteers in Tarnaveni hospital and continue to be involved in the work. Everyone working for VfMH is a volunteer. Funding VfMH rely on donations to continue the work. As the organisation is run entirely by volunteers with expenses covered by members, all funds raised go directly to the hospital or the volunteers to enable them to work with the patients of Tarnaveni hospital. The majority of money is raised by volunteers who have worked in the hospital and want to support the continuation of the work. To donate please send a cheque to "Volunteers for Mental Health" and send it to the following address: 7 Dewsbury close Pinner HA5 5JG If you would like to make a regular donation to VfMH please contact us or download the regular donation form from the downloads page. | In 1991 a psychiatric nurse travelled out to Tarnaveni to deliver aid to the children's hospital. While he was there he asked what happened to the children when they became adults. He was taken to the adult psychiatric hospital and told that many of the children ended up there. He was deeply moved by what he saw. He realised that all the international attention was focused on the children while adults were largely ignored although their needs were as great. |
